Lansford begins paving projects, OKs vehicle purchase

Lansford Borough began paving streets this week and expects to pave a total of six blocks this year.

Borough council on Wednesday approved paving the following the streets: the 100-block of East Abbott from Springgarden to South Walnut Street; Coal Street from Route 209/Patterson Street to West Ridge Street; the unit block of East Bertsch Street from Tunnel Street to Springgarden Street.

Also approved was Center Street from Spring Street to Water Street, and the unit block of East Abbott Street from Springgarden Street to midway of the unit block of East Abbott Street.

The borough also authorized ARRO Consulting, the borough engineer, to prepare specifications for the borough to advertise bids for a borough shed and pad to be located adjacent to the new borough garage on Dock Street.

Vehicles

Council also approved buying one vehicle and the sale of several other vehicles through public bid.

Council bought a 2016 Ford sport utility vehicle for the code and ordinance officer for $4,750 from Miracle Ford in Tamaqua.

Council Vice President Jay Doyle said that he has seen the vehicle and it’s worth purchasing.

Last week, council members had discussed purchasing a truck for the code officer during a budget meeting, or possibly having the code officer take a police SUV that the borough is rotating out as it replaces vehicles.

Councilman Joseph Butrie was opposed to buying the SUV.

Council also agreed to sell the former 2003 Mercury police car that the code officer has been using, once the new vehicle is in service.

Another police vehicle, a 2014 Ford, will also be put up for public bid after being stripped of all safety and police equipment and decals. A minimum bid of $1,500 will be sought.

Two other public works vehicles, a 1990 Ford dump truck, and the 1991 Ford street sweeper will also be put up for public bid with a minimum bid of $3,000 each.
