Banks Twp. says residents not following trash rules

Problems with trash is causing the Banks Township Supervisors to crack down using the township’s garbage ordinance.

Thomas Trammell, one of the township’s garbage collectors, told the supervisors Monday night about a number of problems he has encountered while collecting trash in the township.

“There has been an increase in trash, and it put a strain on us,” Trammell said. “Some people aren’t using (garbage) bags. They are just putting the trash in cans. All I can do is dump the cans, and they are heavy. The cans should have holes in the bottom to drain (rain) water. And they are using grocery bags, when they should be using garbage bags.”

Supervisor Rick Porpiglia said the township ordinance prohibits the use of grocery bags to dispose of trash.

“We found trash on the Spring Mountain near Beaver Meadows,” Porpiglia said. “We went through it, but couldn’t find any names in it. It looked like an old (swimming) pool liner. We disposed of it.”

Porpiglia agreed with what Trammell said.

“The water in the cans makes them heavier,” Porpiglia said. “They (residents) are not putting the trash in the proper receptacles. They are using the grocery bags, which is against our ordinance.”

The supervisor said they are still looking for a new code enforcement officer.

“It would be nice if the person had some certification, but they can always get them,” said Supervisor Charles Schalles.
