Thorpe traffic options

Visitors flocking to Jim Thorpe this fall now have a new option for parking. Pocono Whitewater and Pocono Biking are offering free parking at Pocono Whitewater Rafting (1519 Route 903) along with a $5 per person round-trip shuttle to get visitors within walking distance of Jim Thorpe’s historic district.

Running on weekends from Sept. 28-29 to Nov. 2-3, the shuttle service will operate continuously from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., dropping off at LiveWell Empowerment, 30 River St.

From there, visitors can walk across the “Sergeant AJ Baddick Bridge” to access the town’s museums, train ride, restaurants and shops.

“One of our goals this year was to keep as many vehicles out of the downtown as we could so this is a great option for motorists, especially those coming from the east side and the Route 903 exit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike,” Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joe Schatz said. “I think they can get somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 cars out there and then shuttle people down closer to town.”

Cash or credit cards will be accepted and kids under 5 ride the shuttle free.

For those looking for alternative parking, there are several other options.

Located at 1 Susquehanna St., near the train station, the Carbon County lot charges $8 per day on weekdays and $15 per day on weekends.

At 163 W. Broadway, the Immaculate Conception Parish lot offers parking for $25 (cash) or $27 (credit card) on weekends throughout October. The lot opens at 11 a.m.

Prepaid, reserved parking is available at Mauch Chunk Lake Park for $25, which includes two shuttle passes. Additional shuttle passes can be purchased for $3 per person.

Sam Miller Field will again be available for shuttle parking on the first three October weekends. Parking there at Sam Miller costs $20 and is cash only.

Shuttles from the lake and Sam Miller pick up and drop off near the Mauch Chunk Opera House.

All of the options, Schatz said, help police with traffic flow downtown.

“We want to keep vehicles moving through that area as best we can,” he said.
