Saucon surges past Palmerton
HELLERTOWN — One practice at a time. One play at a time. One game at a time.
It’s a mantra — and mindset — that Saucon Valley mentor Anthony Brinkley has instilled in his team.
Brinkley is a process-oriented coach who knows success won’t happen overnight.
The Panthers have bought in to his methods. And the results have followed.
Saucon Valley surged past Palmerton 63-7 on Friday to stay unbeaten on the season.
It was an outcome the seemed unlikely at halftime, with the score tied 7-7.
“Our whole thing has been about executing and going play by play, and day by day, practice by practice, all that stuff, has been a message from camp,” said Brinkley. “And really I just thought we didn’t execute in the first half, and Palmerton is really well coached, they’re always tough kids, so hats off to them. And then in the second half I thought we just flipped that switch of execution and doing the right things and playing to our potential.
“And sometimes you get a little lucky when things start going your way and the bounces are going your way and momentum and everything. But over every single touchdown that was scored or any stat today I’m really, really proud of our senior class and really, all of all of our kids for just battling through adversity. We talked at halftime that this was just one of those moments; we’re staring it in the face, we’ve got to get over it, and let’s and let’s get it.”
The Panthers (3-0) scored 35 points in the third quarter to take control, and turn a tie game into a 42-7 advantage.
They hit on big plays, with Braden Rohn throwing a 52-yard touchdown to Shane Kerosetz and a 42-yard score to Andrew Gilbert in the third quarter.
Rohn finished 12-of-17 for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Kerosetz had three grabs for 112 yards and a score, while Gilbert caught five balls for 87 yards and two TDs.
Jared Rohn carried 12 time for 86 yards and two scores.
Palmerton (0-3) battled back to tie the game in the first half. The Bombers came up with a stop on fourth down, and marched 43 yards in 12 plays, with Jameson Trainer going into the end zone from three yards out and Trevor Anthony adding the extra point to make it 7-7 with 5:44 left in the first half.
Saucon drove to the Palmerton goal line on its ensuing possession and face fourth and goal with 14.0 left in the period. But the Bombers stood tall, coming up with a stop and forcing a fumble to keep the game tied 7-7, with a fumble recovery by Alex Keiper.
Palmerton kicked off to start the third quarter, and the ball landed in Saucon territory without a Panther player recovering it. The Bombers alertly covered it and took over at the Saucon 33-yard line.
But the Panthers forced a fumble and found the end zone two plays later on a Jared Rohn 19-yard run, starting a run of 56 unanswered points in the second half.
“We’re consistently inconsistent,” said Bombers head coach Chris Walkowiak. “And that could be attributed to youth. But right now we just have to figure out right mix of players doing things, and have to continue to get better.
“But the first thing again is consistency leads to habits, and habits lead to confidence, and confidence leads to making good things happen on the field. And right now we need to get the consistency, do the little things that we preach week in and week out, but we’re not getting that on a consistent basis.
“I think once we get that on a consistent basis, you’ll see an improvement. So there definitely was improvement in the first half compared to what we did last week. Definitely a step in the right direction. But you’ve got to string four quarters like that together.”
STAT LINE … Trainer finished with 15 carries for 31 yards, while also throwing for 30 yards. Caleb Sagastume had eight carries for 38 yards, and Michael Garey carried eight times for 34 yards, while Vincent Taglieri rushed four times for 31 yards. Sagastume also had two grabs for 14 yards.
UP NEXT … Palmerton travels to Lehighton next Friday, while Saucon visits Notre Dame Green Pond.
DE-FENSE … Saucon got defensive scores when Parker Skoda got a 65-yard pick-six, and another when Sahaley Hernandez picked up a fumble near the one-yard line and fell into the end zone.
