Nesquehoning Borough Council
Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting last week:
• Approved advertising an amendment to the firearms ordinance.
• Approved updating the Uniform Fire Protection Code to implement the 2024 version of the code.
• Discussed a police vehicle that was just repaired at a cost of nearly $10,000 but is now unusable. Mayor Tom Kattner said that he was told by several dealerships and garages that the vehicle is not usable and randomly shuts off when driven.
Kattner said that he couldn’t have a police officer driving that vehicle knowing that there was a problem; however, this creates a problem when officers are out on the road because one officer does not have a vehicle.
Councilman Bruce Nalesnik asked that council contact a few more dealerships because the car just had an engine block rebuilt and now a new problem could make those repairs a waste.
• Announced that a boot drop to benefit the three fire departments will be held in October.
• Appointed Gerald Heffelfinger and Cory Nealis to serve as borough fire police.
• Approved a contract with Emory J. Toth, doing business as Water Mechanics, for the sewer department.
• Approved a contract with Dunn’s Tree Service to cut down a dead tree in New Columbus Park at a cost of $1,500.
• Accepted a quote from AM Trust to provide workers’ compensation insurance, as well as notify State Workers Insurance Fund that the borough will not be renewing the coverage through the company.
• Accepted the resignation of Stephanie Ferraira as the cleaning person for the borough. The position is now open for applicants.
• Approved placing a lien on a property that was the location of a house fire on Yard Street last month. The lien is due to pending legal action.
