State police release DUI enforcement details

The Pennsylvania State Police released the results of its annual Labor Day Weekend enforcement initiative.

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, troopers investigated 580 crashes that resulted in 170 injuries and six deaths. Impaired driving was a factor in 65 of those crashes, three of which were fatal.

Troopers arrested 514 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and issued 24,865 citations, including 7,069 for speeding, 889 for failing to wear a seat belt and 121 for not securing children in safety seats.

The 580 crashes police investigated compares to 671 in 2023, while the five fatal crashes are three more than 2023. There were 10 people killed in crashes last year, four more than this year. There were 170 people injured, compared to 220 in 2023.

As far as DUI crashes, the 65 police responded to this Labor Day weekend were four more than the 61 they handled in 2023. The three fatal DUI crashes are one more than last year’s two.

There were 514 DUI arrests made by police in both years. Police issued 7,069 speeding citations this year, compared to 9,110 in 2023. The 121 child seat belt citations issued this year were down from the 233 in 2023. Seat belt citations issued totaled 889, 35 more than a year ago, and the 16,786 other citations issued were down from the 17,339 issued in 2023.

The following data was released regarding troops that cover the Times News area:

Troop L, which covers the counties of Berks, Lebanon and Schuylkill – 30 crashes, 1 fatal crash, 1 person killed, 15 injured and 4 DUI crashes; Troop M, which covers the counties of Bucks, Lehigh and Northampton – 36 crashes, 5 injured and 3 DUI crashes; and Troop N, which covers Columbia, Carbon, southern Luzerne and Monroe counties – 41 crashes, 7 injuries and 4 DUI crashes.

Enforcement: Troop L – 38 DUI arrests, 554 speeding citations, 5 child seat citations, 58 seat belt citations, 9 seat belt warnings, 896 other citations and 18 self-initiated criminal arrests; Troop M – 20 DUI arrests, 171 speeding citations, 5 child seat citations, 22 seat belt citations, 22 seat belt warnings, 894 other citations and 16 self-initiated criminal arrests; and Troop N – 67 DUI arrests, 510 speeding citations, 40 child seat citations, 93 seat belt citations, 18 seat belt warnings, 1,646 other citations and 13 self-initiated criminal arrests.
