Seniors learn about resources, medicines

An estimated 500 to 1,000 people attended the annual Senior Expo at the Franklin Township Fire Company, sponsored by state Sen. David Argall and Rep. Doyle Hefley‘s office.

The large crowd had an opportunity to learn about the many resources, ask questions and gather helpful information.

In addition to information about resources, flu shots were available to eventgoers. A prescription drug drop-off was also available.

More than 50 vendors shared information about services, including the fire police, prothonotary, Medicare representatives, local pharmacies and residential facilities.

Ronald Hence of Weatherly said,” I come every year and enjoy it. I just learned how to get rid of prescription drugs with a liquid that neutralizes the drugs and then can be disposed of.”

Yvonne Anthony of First National Pharmacy in Weatherly noted that they provide free delivery, flu, COVID-19, RSV and shingles vaccines, as well as blister packaging for medications. That allows all daily medications to be together in one blister pack so that people can easily take their daily meds.

Anne Marie Oblas of Andreas was finding out information about home modifications to help her mother-in-law. The United Disability Center in Tamaqua offers services to help with this.

Argall noted, “Representative Heffley and I represent a lot of seniors, and this is an opportunity to ask questions under one roof.

“We bring together so many agencies and resources for seniors to help seniors get as much information as possible.”

Heffley’s office awarded door prizes.

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch? If you attended the expo, that was part of the day, with hot dogs, macaroni salad, drinks and desserts.

Items including pens, bags and lip balm were given out by many vendors.
