September 5, 1992 — John Griffiths scores three touchdowns, including one on a 79-yard run, to help Northwestern pull away from Hamburg for a 41-7 victory in its season opener. Griffiths, who finishes the contest with 132 rushing yards on just eight carries, opens the scoring in the first quarter with a 6-yard burst into the end zone. The Tigers, coached by Bob Mitchell, double the advantage when Griffiths breaks free for his long run. His third tally comes in the third period when he catches a 21-yard TD pass from Shawn Paras. Paras also finds Chris Tice with an 11-yard scoring toss, while Steve Pagan and Larry Koch add fourth-quarter touchdown runs.
