Slatington Fire Department raises funds through coin toss

The Slatington Fire Department held a “coin toss” Saturday to raise funds for new equipment, such as hoods and gloves.

“All of our gear has a maximum service life of 10 years from the date of manufacture” said Chief Robert Reph. “Every penny matters.”

Money raised at the “coin toss” is used for day-to-day supplies for the station, Reph said.

He added that the department is looking to replace its 1993 engine and 1995 rescue trucks with a new engine, which is quoted to be approximately $1.4 million.

Reph said that he has submitted multiple grants to help cover the cost of the new apparatus along with improvements to the fire station.

“It was built in 1985” he said.

The Slatington fire station also houses one ambulance from Northern Valley EMS in addition to their multiple pieces of fire and rescue apparatus.
