No. 9 Coal Miners’ Festival this weekend

The 17th Annual Coal Miners’ Heritage Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum, 9 W. Dock St., Lansford.

The event celebrates coal region history and culture, and includes food, music, crafts and more.

Attendees can take guided tours of the 1855 No. 9 Coal Mine or visit the area’s largest mining museum.

The ever-popular coal shoveling competition begins at 2 p.m. There will be coal screening demonstrations and historical displays.

Visitors can enjoy Coal Region music and listen to folk musicians Jay Smar and David Matsinko.

Polka Joe Manjack from WMGH Magic 105.5 radio will broadcast his “Magic Polka Machine” from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., and strolling musicians and DJ Shawn will play classic old time mining and railroad songs. There will be a possible guest appearance by the Breaker Boys.

Children will enjoy Buster the Clown, the bounce house and games, including old time coal sack races.

There will be historic and cultural organizations, a few early automobiles and a vintage hi-lift coal delivery truck on display. There will be a coal patch skit, vendors, craft fair, Coal Region souvenirs and vintage mining artifacts for sale.

Tons of homemade Coal Region ethnic foods including halupki, halushki, pierogies, potato bleenies will be available, as will other festival favorites including pit beef and pork barbecue, corn on the cob, funnel cakes, chicken fingers, burgers, fresh cut fries, turkey and beef barbecue, homemade baked goods, birch beer on tap, Leiby’s ice cream, hot dogs and more.

A large basket raffle with many great prizes will be held, and folks are invited to see the new Dorrance Fan House under construction.

Organizers said the event is fun for the entire family.
