Marian golfers down Weatherly
BARNESVILLE – A pair of youthful golf teams were looking to conquer White Birch Golf Course, which has become home to both Marian and Weatherly, Tuesday afternoon in a matchup of Schuylkill League Division II opponents.
It’s a perfect venue to garner confidence, and for Marian it was a day in which it scored well with three golfers shooting in the 80s to lead the Colts to a 345-429 win. The decision also put Marian at even par for the season, 4-4.
“I’m very happy with the way we’re playing,” said Marian mentor Tom Jones, in his first season leading the program.
Jones is focused on continued growth and improvement from his squad as the season progresses.
The same can be said for Brian Kaminski, who has been around the Weatherly team for several seasons and knows patience is the key for a team, much like Marian, filled with youth, but raw talent and skills.
“We’ve got a lot of brand new golfers,” Kaminski mentioned. “It’s a really nice group, we don’t have a senior, but a bunch of sophomores and juniors. I can see improvement each and every time we have a match ... that’s a big factor in getting better.”
Alex Krapf had the best round on both accounts. The Marian junior shot an 83, with a 42 on the front side. Usually the Colts are led by junior Sam Farrone. Tuesday, Farrone carded a 40 on the front, but went five more strokes on the back to finish with an 85.
It was similar for Brayden Grant, who matched Farrone’s 40, but then came home with a 47 to card a respectable 87.
Krapf scored an eagle on the 16th hole.
“I had a great drive hit, and it went right down the middle,” Krapf explained about the 401-yard, par 5 hole.
He used a 7-iron getting it to the fringe, and then turned to his trusted putter from there.
“My hybrid was my best club (in my bag),” he continued.
Farrone has been stellar for Marian this season, owning a low round of 77.
“I had eight pars, but the back nine I kind of lost it a bit,” Farrone said of his round Tuesday.
Jones tries to mix up his golfers, saying that six of the team’s players are evenly matched.
“Our kids have a lot of ability, and one through six they’re capable of scoring,” Jones pointed out. “Like most golfers, the key is the short game. We do our share of practicing it. We’ve spent our time both here and at Eagle Rock, as well. We do a lot of different drills so that we can improve things in that area. It’s the toughest part of the game.”
Jones said most of his team comes from the sophomore grouping.
“We’ve got a lot of ninth graders who have a lot of potential, but most of our team is made up with 10th graders,” Jones said.
MARIAN ROUNDS ... With Krapf, Farrone and Grant heading the field Tuesday, Colin Yurkanin (90) and Tyler Rebarchak (92) rounded out the top five scorers for the Colts.
GETTING BETTER ... Weatherly found Matt Adler with the best score as he shot a 97.
“What I’m looking for is improvement as we go forward with such a young group of golfers,” Kaminski said.
