Lehigh Twp. tax collector resigns

Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors accepted the resignation of the township’s tax collector during their meeting last week.

Mary Louise Trexler served 39 years as the tax collector.

Supervisor Janet Sheats thanked Trexler for her decades of service to the township and for putting the residents first.

“Her unwavering dedication, and loyalty to the residents of Lehigh Township have gone unnoticed,” Sheats said.

Trexler also read a statement that she had prepared.

She thanked the residents for providing her with the opportunity to serve them for so long.

“You are the best,” she said. “I have many new friends and family. It has been a relationship like no other.”

But she also noted that it hasn’t been a completely smooth ride over the years.

“I also want to thank Janet Sheats for reaching out to me to help me in this final decision to step down. She was kind and compassionate and not once insulting or shamed me. I wish I could say the same for all.”

Trexler said Supervisor Cynthia Miller was hurtful.

“You want full control. Employees fear for their jobs if they don’t go along with whatever you say,” Trexler said in her statement.

At this point President Michael Jones said, “If this is going to be a bashing,” but Trexler interjected, “I’m going to finish. Call the cop to get me out.”

“When people come to meetings and want to speak, you cut them off. How rude and condescending. Well I just want to say all the money you spent on the taxpayers was just so you looked good,” Trexler said.

“The state told me that the fines of $4,000 last year that were imposed on me were excessive and should be challenged. I wish I could have finished my term of office, but with my family’s health issues, I am making that my priority and must resign.”

When Mary was finished, the audience gave her a round of applause.

Resident Phil Gogel questioned the board.

“Why didn’t you try to help Mary when she needed it?” he asked.
