During the county commissioners’ meeting last week, the board of commissioners approved a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME District Council 87, AFL-CIO, Local 2483 for a contract effective Jan. 1, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2026. The union represents court-related professionals.

Under the terms of the agreement, the contract now incorporates a salary structure based on years of service with the county for assistant district attorneys and assistant public defenders.

The new wage scale for full-time assistant district attorneys starts at $65,276.45 annually for new hires; while new hires for full-time assistant public defenders starts at $60,000 a year. Salaries for both departments raise in increments based on the employee’s years of continuous service with the county.

The contract also outlines wage increases for the part-time employees, which include a 2% increase in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

In addition, the new contract sets the hourly wage for the social worker, which is a grant funded position, as well as outlines benefit time allowances, health insurance and prescription copays.

Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko said that this was the sixth union contract the county has settled. One more is still in negotiations.
