All aboard for 2nd Tamaqua Railfest; event Saturday based around station

The second annual Tamaqua Railfest will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Tamaqua.

The event will feature all things trains, including a train ride, railroad-themed crafters and vendors, model train layouts, vintage mining and rail displays, and walking tours of railroad sites.

Many of the festivities will be based around the Tamaqua Railroad Station, which turns 150 this year. Tours of the station will be offered and 150th anniversary souvenirs will be available from the station gift shop.

Walking tours to railroad sites will be held at 1 and 3 p.m.

A 90-minute, round-trip train excursion to the High Bridge will leave at 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the station.

The Tamaqua Historical Society Museum on West Broad Street, along with the Hegarty Blacksmith Shop and new Tamaqua Area Wagon Works on Hegarty Avenue, will be open.

The Tamaqua Anthracite Railroad Club will operate the HO scale train layout from its headquarters at 139 W. Broad St., and a narrow gauge operating backyard train setup will be available for view at 319 Rolling Mill Ave.

A historical re-enactment of the Molly Maguires and arrival of Pinkerton Detective James McParland by train will be held at 12:30 p.m. from station.

The Coalcracker Barbershop Chorus will perform at 1 p.m., and DJ Shawn Frederickson will spin tunes throughout the event.

A variety of foods including sandwiches, fresh cut fries, bacon on a stick, hot dogs, popcorn, baked goods, empanadas and macaroni and cheese will be available. The Citizens Fire Company will have a cheesesteak sale from noon to 4 p.m.

On hand will be Penn Hobbies, Lakeside Winery, Revere Brewery, Reading Company Technical and Historical Society, Dave Hafer with photo albums of railroad scenes, Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, Tamaqua Historical Society and President Dale Freudenberger with a display of the Lehigh and New England Railroad, Reading & Northern Railroad, Project 113 and Minersville Train Station, Kay’s Kakes, Railroad and Industrial Preservation Society, Anthracite Railroad Memorial, Demmer Graphics with coal region souvenirs, Lansford Lehigh and New England station display, railroad and mining photographs for sale, and more.

The Tamaqua Arts Center will be open for crafts and other events. The Tamaqua Public Library will have a free children’s train theme story time and a train display and giveaway. Local businesses, restaurants and breweries will be open.
