PV’s Patascher brothers capture Wasser Cup title
Is Lydon Patascher playing the best golf of his life?
It sure seems like it.
The Pleasant Valley senior, along with his brother Drew, captured the 24th annual Wasser Cup title at Wedgewood Golf Club Friday to cap an unforgettable 24 hours.
It was a victory that came one day after Lydon broke the course record held by the legendary Arnold Palmer and Kyle Wambold at Allentown Municipal Golf Course with a 60, topping the previous mark of 61.
Lydon and Drew placed first on Friday with a 61 in the best ball tournament.
“It’s awesome being able to play that with my brother,” said Lydon. “And winning it means a lot to me, because it’s our first and only year playing together. It’s just so special. He really helped me today. I did the best I could and so did he, and I have to give him a lot of credit.”
Lydon and Drew started strong on Friday, going two-under through the first three holes.
“My putter was working really well today,” said Lydon. “I was just kind of making everything I needed to.”
The duo was five-under through the front nine holes, and started the back nine with a par, and went birdie, birdie, par, birdie.
The teams of Pen Argyl’s Shane Moser and Joey DosSatos and Southern Lehigh’s Davie Burmeister and David Tervalon each finished with a 63. But Moser and DosSatos placed second on a match of cards.
“Coming in, my brother and I definitely knew we had a good chance with the way we’ve both been playing,” said Lydon. “He had his best round in a match Thursday, which was a three-over 75 at Allentown. So he was coming into this hot, and I’m obviously playing the best golf of my life right now, so we kind of knew we had a chance but that there would be some other tough teams.
“At the turn we were kind of all within a stroke of each other, and then we just kind of went on a run of birdies, and that kind of set us apart from the field.”
Lydon and Drew, a freshman, were a perfect match Friday.
“It was awesome to be able to play with him, just to say you won a big high school tournament with your brother is awesome,” said Lydon, the reigning Times News/LVHN Golfer of the Year. “I’ve placed third in this, I’ve placed second in this. But I knew he was going to do great. If I had one bad hole, and he was able to play solid and makes par, that would benefit us 100%. It clearly showed today that we were able to win.
“There’s no better feeling than these last 24 hours, shooting that 60 yesterday, and then having this today. It’s been crazy.”
Lydon has set himself apart throughout his career, and etched his name in the history books on Thursday with his record-setting round. The senior posted a 31 on the front nine at Allentown Municipal, before closing with a 29 to establish a new mark at the course and set a school record in the process.
“I haven’t worked much with my swing. I’m usually a feel player. If I’m feeling good and it’s working, then I’m not going to change it,” said Lydon. “I’ve really just been focusing in on my misses. My miss now, instead of left off the green, it’s going to be left side of the green and at least give me a putt. I’m hitting more greens, which is giving me more chances at birdie putts. “With the way I’m playing right now, my confidence is through the roof. I just step up to the ball and it’s going basically where I want it to. Even if it’s a shot that doesn’t go where I want it to, it’s in a good enough spot that I’m not costing myself any strokes.”
He certainly wasn’t missing many on Thursday during his record-setting round at Allentown Municipal Golf Course.
“My front nine was five-under, and I wouldn’t even say I was super locked in there, I was just having fun with the kids I was playing with,” said Lydon. “And that’s when I play my best. When I’m really locked in from the start, that kind of throws me off and I’m not playing my best. But if I’m just joking around and focus during that 30 seconds to hit my shot, that’s when I’m playing my best. I was sinking putts left and right.
“Once I got to the back nine, I was still talking to everyone, but then I was on hole 14, and all the coaches were up on the left side of the green and I hit my approach shot from 125 yards out and didn’t like it. (Pleasant Valley) Coach (Steve) Krechel was behind me and said, ‘No, it’s going to be fine.’ I was able to hole-out for eagle there, and it was just crazy. At that point, I was 10-under through 14, and I knew I needed to lock in. I went birdie, birdie the next two holes and was just so focused. I had a bogey on 17, and it kind of threw me off; it was just unlucky. But then I had a birdie on 18. It balanced out. Getting a 59 would have been cool, but there’s nothing wrong with a 60.”
That there isn’t.
Lydon also got a hole-in-one on a 305-yard par 4 at Indian Mountain Golf Course earlier this month.
No matter how incredible his accomplishments may be, Krechel isn’t surprised by what Patascher does on or off the golf course.
“When he was in ninth grade and could start playing with us, he was already the No. 1 player on our team,” said Krechel. “To see him mature over the years, and work so hard; he outworks every kid that I’ve ever known with the time he puts into his game, and the love he has for the game is just so evident. It’s so nice to have him put it together. To see him shoot a number like that is just incredible.”
