A Lehighton man has been charged with fleeing police following a traffic stop.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Jason Pryce of the Lehighton Borough Police Department in the case against David Kudla, 43:
Around 10:05 p.m. July 17, Pryce and Officer Alex Hummel were performing traffic enforcement. While traveling east on South Street, Pryce saw a blue pickup with rust on the passenger side wheel well. The pickup matched the description of a vehicle of a person wanted by another area police department.
Pryce made a right turn onto South First Street, and the truck had a brake light out.
He attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The truck pulled over at Franklin and Bridge streets, but fled.
Pryce pursued Kudla, then made a left turn onto Allen Street, which is a one-way street, and then a left onto Prospect Street.
Kudla opened the driver door and ran, leaving the pickup in drive.
Hummel tried to chase Kudla and fell near the pickup.
Pryce caught Kudla near the Lehigh River, taking him into custody.
Hummel was transported to St. Luke’s Carbon Campus for an ankle injury.
Kudla declined medical treatment at the scene.
He faces charges of evading arrest or detention on foot, fleeing or attempting to elude officer, no rear lights and driving while his license is suspended due to DUI.
He is currently jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail. Charges were held for court in a preliminary hearing before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe on Wednesday.
