W. Penn to vacate part of Rabbit Run Road
A portion of Rabbit Run Road in West Penn Township might soon be vacated.
“It has been a problem road over several years,” township Roadmaster Jeremy Frable told supervisors during Monday’s board meeting.
The stretch, between Walnut Road and Route 895, includes a steep hill.
And although it is posted as having no winter maintenance, motorists continue to use the road.
When they do, Frable said, some get stuck or have slid through a fence surrounding a farm field.
He noted that a property owner on the road often gets contacted in the dead of night by stranded motorists.
Frable added that GPS systems are sending drivers on Rabbit Run Road. Recently, he said, a furniture delivery truck became stuck there.
“No matter what (road crews) put into it,” Frable said, the road keeps getting ripped up.
It is costing the township money.
“The cost of maintaining it versus keeping it doesn’t make sense,” Frable noted. He added that only one home is on the portion of road, which also provides access to a tree farm.
Supervisors Chairman Anthony “Tony” Prudenti said Frable is about to begin looking for grants for road maintenance.
“That road needs a lot of work,” Prudenti said.
Using funds for the road, he said, might not be worth it.
Supervisor Jim Akins, however, said he travels on the road.
“It’s a mess, but people use it,” he said.
He suggested waiting for input from motorists before the road is vacated.
“I just think we should put it out there. If we don’t hear from anyone, vacate it,” Akins suggested.
The board directed Solicitor Paul Datte to prepare an ordinance vacating the road. The ordinance will be ready for the next supervisors’ meeting on Aug. 20.
“We can always rescind it,” supervisor Glen Hummel said.
