Olympics report: Diving, track and a souvenir photo

Editor’s note: Anna Laible of Lehighton is covering the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, with a team of fellow journalists from the University of North Carolina. She is reporting regularly on her experience there for the Times News.

Day 7

Today started early with taking public transportation to the Aquatics Centre, where diving takes place. We had a bit of an adventure trying to find the media entrance after walking a mile from the metro to get there, but we found it and were still able to see the 3m synchro men’s springboard final.

After the final, I talked with Greg Duncan, who competed at UNC his freshman year, before taking the short trip across the bridge to Stade de France for track and field.

It was fun catching the end of the morning track and field session, and the media table overlooking the track field was my home for the next six hours working on different stories, and it wasn’t a bad view!

It was also fun to reconnect with my ESPN friend Coley Harvey, who I first met at March Madness and who has been on my podcast.

I caught some more track under the lights and then headed back to the hotel so I could grab dinner somewhere before midnight.

Day 9

I enjoyed starting my day by meeting up with other UNC students at the Trocadero and having a group lunch for the first time in the last week.

After that, we headed to the hospitality suite to interview Dean Linke, who I’ve had on my podcast, and his wife, Leah, and we had a great conversation with both of them.

After that, we were able to tour around the amazing building with all the Olympic medals from every Olympics, the Olympic torch, Olympic flag, and even the Olympic mascot. We also were able to take pictures with the Olympic rings, which I’ve always wanted to do!

Then we grabbed some food and desserts and watched gymnastics on a big screen outside before I headed out to go to track and field.

After I covered a South Carolina athlete in the prelims, I had a front-row seat to watch what was, in my opinion, the most exciting men’s 100m final of all time.

Team USA’s Noah Lyles won by 0.005, the first American to win the race in 20 years.

Such a great day and I can’t wait to see gymnastics one final time tomorrow!
