Rick K. Road Trip returning to Carbon fair Monday night

Rick K. Road Trip will help usher in the 25th annual Carbon County Fair with an opening-night performance Monday at the fairgrounds, along Little Gap Road outside Palmerton.

The act, set to take the Main Stage at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., has performed at the fair three or four times over the past decade, last appearing in 2021.

Rick K. Road Trip “always look forward to our visits,” said lead singer Rick K., who resides in his birthplace of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Fairgoers, he added, “can expect a dynamic range of rock ’n’ roll music from the 1960s to today, delivered with high energy and interactive crowd engagement.”

Aside from Rick K., the band lineup at the fair will feature: Seth Mellon, of Reading, on saxophone; Johnny Henline and Jay Vansyoc, both of West Virginia, on guitar and bass, respectively; and Michael Ramsey, of St. Louis, on drums.

Rick K., who opts not to reveal his last name, grew up in a musical family.

“My dad was a drummer in the 1960s. My mother sang in the church choir. My grandmother was a jazz and gospel pianist. There was music everywhere in my house.”

Rick K.’s father taught him to play the drums, while his mother took him to church, where he sang in the choir from an early age.

“These diverse musical influences allowed me to appreciate all styles and decades of music, much of which is reflected in my current show.”

When he was 13, Rick K. started playing drums and singing from behind the drum set with other bands, performing in nightclubs and fraternal organizations. By age 20, he formed Rick K. & The Allnighters, taking on the role of lead vocalist.

Like most acts, Rick K. — whose discography consists of 2000s albums “Greatest Hits Made in the U.S.A.” and “Oh, What a Night” — started on the local level. He gradually expanded his group’s radius of performances and locations over time.

Word of mouth and booking agencies helped the band “become increasingly in demand,” Rick K. said, adding that the group plays 150-plus shows a year in more than 40 states.

In 2019, Rick K. — performing full-time for 15-plus years — changed the band’s name to Rick K. Road Trip “after several band-member changes inspired me to shake things up a bit. I might revert to Rick K. & The Allnighters at some point, but it’s been fun mixing it up.”

Through the years, some of Rick K.’s favorite gigs include governor inaugurations and NASCAR events.

“I have performed at Charlotte, Kansas and Texas motor speedways. I performed for Joe Manchin’s inauguration as West Virginia governor. I also performed at the NBA Finals in 2000 in Indianapolis and several NFL games for the Indianapolis Colts.”

Rick K.’s favorites also include overseas gigs in Russia, Austria and China.

“Our overseas performances were the result of people watching our videos on YouTube,” he said. “Several trips were open-to the-public events, ticketed concerts, and several were private corporate events.”

Performing, in particular the “satisfaction in knowing that I can brighten someone’s day,” means Rick K. plans plenty of future road trips. Providing fans an escape, even briefly, from life’s challenges also makes the job rewarding.

“I’m fortunate to do what I love for a living,” said the singer, who has U.S. gigs scheduled through December. “Traveling, meeting amazing people and exploring new places while getting paid is a dream come true. Why retire when I’m having so much fun?”
