Lansford man charged with striking vehicle during chase
A Lansford man has been charged after leading police in a stolen car and hitting another vehicle.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Jason Pryce, of the Lehighton Borough Police Department, he stated the following.
At 10:45 p.m. July 26, Pryce and Officer Ivan Centeno were at the Exxon gas station on Route 443 when they saw a small black sedan driving recklessly in the middle turning lane. The car made a right-hand turn onto the McCall Bridge from the left turn lane.
Pryce activated his overhead lights and siren, approached the car but couldn’t see the license plate because of a cover on it. The car did not stop.
The car went into the left lane on Route 209 and accelerated, passing numerous vehicles in the opposite lane at a high rate of speed and at blind areas where opposing traffic had to slam on the brakes to avoid crashing into the car driven by Shivers, 19.
When coming up to Country Junction, the vehicle pulled into the parking lot, nearly struck the fence, and went back out to Route 209 southbound.
The vehicle turned onto Forest Inn Road and struck another vehicle head on.
Pryce immediately dispatched fire and EMS to the scene and observed Shivers getting out of the passenger side of the vehicle and attempting to run.
Police took Shivers into custody and found marijuana paraphernalia and suspected marijuana on him.
Shivers and the people from the other vehicle were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation. The passenger from the victim’s vehicle suffered serious injuries.
The VIN showed the car was reported stolen out of New York on June 30.
State police also informed Pryce that the license plate on the vehicle was not a valid and the valid license plate was in the glove box with the vehicle registration.
Police said Shivers had bloodshot eyes and droopy eyelids. When Shivers was asked when he last used an illegal substance, he said he smoked marijuana an hour before police tried stopping him. Shivers consented to a blood draw.
Shivers faces charges of two counts each of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, and one count each of receiving stolen property, fleeing or attempting to elude officer, DUI — general Imp/Inc of driving safely, DUI — controlled substance, marijuana — small amount personal use, reckless driving, disregard traffic lane, driving at safe speed and obscured plates.
Shivers is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
