Wrestlers unite Saturday to benefit S. Ward playground
Wrestlers from around the region will suffer some beatings Saturday — but it all will be for the good of the South Ward Playground in Tamaqua.
“Beatdown in the Playground” gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday at the 235 Penn St. playground. The free event will feature wrestlers from the Jaded Angel Wrestling Academy and EGW.
“I grew up in the playground, and my family helps run the playground, so it was like, ‘Let’s do a benefit show for the playground’,” said organizer Tyler Culkins, of Tamaqua. “And everybody agreed. We want to make this an annual thing that we do.”
Culkins is a trainer at Jaded Angel in Jim Thorpe. He’s also a wrestler, and competes under the name “Devin Thrasher.”
He’ll be wrestling, as will about 15 others from Jaded Angel and EGW. The event will be tournament-style, and one winner will be crowned.
“Our main event is definitely a must-see match,” Culkins said, “but a lot of our wrestlers will be wrestling two matches, because of it being tournament style.”
Culkins said the ring will be set up in the middle of the playground’s basketball court. But it’s not the first time the wrestlers have taken the ring on the go — and not the first time they’ve held a fundraiser.
“We just started the wrestling academy back in February. As we were training, someone reached out to us and asked us to do a benefit show for them,” Culkins said.
Members thought it would be a perfect way to introduce the new academy to the public — and help out a great cause.
The benefit held for a young man battling a brain tumor was successful, Culkins said.
He’s hoping the South Ward benefit will be, too.
“Our idea is to just get people to the playground. You’re not getting charged at the gate. You’re not being charged to watch wrestling,” he said. “The only thing you will be charged for is your food and drinks.”
