Fire damages pole building in Jim Thorpe

A pole building sustained damage during a fire Wednesday afternoon in Jim Thorpe.

Borough fire Chief Vince Yaich said the incident took place around 5:15 p.m. at Day’s Landscaping and Storage Solutions at 50 E. Fifth St.

Yaich said one of the bays was rented out by a local contractor in the borough.

He said it was originally called in as a working structure fire with flames through the roof.

Upon arrival, Yaich said the building was well involved with flames throughout the roof and extending throughout the entire structure.

He said it took about 35 to 40 minutes to get under control, and added crews remained on scene for about another hour taking care of hot spots and doing some overhaul.

Yaich said the pole building was about 25 feet wide by 125 feet long, of which about half of it received heavy fire damage, and the other half some smoke damage. There were no vehicles inside, just some minor landscaping equipment supplies such as straw and oil drums for equipment.

There were no injuries.

Yaich said the cause of the fire is undetermined, and remains under investigation by a state fire marshal.

He said also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Fire Department, Nesquehoning Fire Department, Lansford and Summit Hill RIT Team, and the Lehighton Ambulance and its rehab units.

“Incoming mutual aid companies are a great asset,” Yaich said. “They did a great job with helping us knocking down the fire doing overhaul and cleanup.”
