Joe Eichhorn Sr. was born in 1908 and was an accomplished baseball player.
He was named shortstop of the first half century sandlot team by the Morning Call, and he later went on to manage the Mauch Chunk Tigers.
According to the legendary Joe Boyle, Eichhorn was an excellent athlete in baseball. He played on the 1937 championship team of the Carbon-Schuylkill Baseball League, which also featured a number of Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame Inductees.
Eichhorn also played on the St. Joseph’s Holy Name baseball team in East Mauch Chunk — a team that won the City Championship in 1930. During that game, he collected four hits — including a grand slam.
The Jim Thorpe Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Jim Thorpe Area High School. Tickets to the banquet are $25 and can be purchased by reaching out to Jack Kmetz (570-952-4288) or Craig Zurn (570-325-3855).
