A woman who had two juvenile passengers when she drove her car into the entrance of the Family Dollar store in Tamaqua in April was charged with endangering the welfare of children and driving under the influence of alcohol by Tamaqua police.

Tyshonda Brown, 44, of Tamaqua, also faces charges of reckless endangerment and reckless driving following the 8:33 p.m. April 24 incident.

According to police, officers were called to the store for a report of a vehicle accident and saw the car had crashed through the front doors.

Police spoke to Brown who said the car’s brakes failed as she was attempting to park car. Officers said she had two children as passengers.

Surveillance video from the store show the Brown vehicle pull into a stall, then slightly accelerate before going over the parking stop and through the front doors.

Police said they smelled an odor of alcohol inside the car, and saw a pink glass container that Brown said contained wine. She told officers she had been drinking earlier in the day.

She was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence and consented to a blood alcohol test at a local hospital. Police said results show she had a 0.178 BAC.

Charges were filed July 22.
