Eldred Twp. gets $92K grant for stone arch bridge

Eldred Township has been awarded a $92,000 Local Shares Account grant from Monroe County for the restoration of the stone archway bridge. The award was announced during the supervisors meeting on Wednesday evening.

Ann Velopolcek, the township secretary, said they have also submitted an application for a LSA grant through the state, but she doesn’t know when they will find out if the township is going to receive it.

In all, the township expects the restoration project will cost about $700,000.

Brien Kocher, the township’s engineer and vice president of Hanover Engineering, told the supervisors in September that the cost to restore the bridge would be about $732,000. This is in addition to the cost of permits, fees and studies totaling about $25,000, plus another 15% to 25% for unexpected costs, placing the project upward of $940,000.

Velopolcek said, “The grant is good for three years.”

That will give the township time to seek additional funding, she said.

Once the township finds out about the state grant, then the engineer can begin the preliminary work and pursue permits, Velopolcek said.
