A lead box, which had been placed in the cornerstone of the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Slatington, was opened Sunday during services in the United Presbyterian Church, Fourth Street. About 130 persons were on hand for the breaking of the solder of the box.

The box was placed there when the church was built in 1874. The Rev. David Johnson, pastor of the church, explained its contents included newspapers, coins, books and church membership roster.

The newspaper was a copy of the Slatington News of Sept. 2, 1987, that contained an article about the cornerstone laying of the then new church. The original church was built in 1854.
