Joshua Nochumson, MD

Specialty: Colon and rectal surgery, general surgery

Philosophy of care: Dr. Nochumson is part of Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence, where tens of thousands of people seek care each year.

When he meets with his patients, Dr. Nochumson answers their questions and eases their concerns.

He asks them to call him “Dr. Josh,” and checks on his patients in the hospital to see how they’re doing.

“I know that uncertainty about surgery may drive worry, and I try to provide at least some level of comfort about what they’re about to go through to make a scary process a little less anxiety-provoking,” Dr. Nochumson says.

He feels an “obligation” and “responsibility” to guide them through a vulnerable time consistent with the Hippocratic oath, an ethical code calling physicians to do their best for patients while causing no harm and living exemplary personal and professional lives.

Services offered: Colonoscopy, general surgery, robotic surgery

Conditions treated: Colon and rectal

Why you entered medicine: Dr. Nochumson says entering medicine was a tough choice because he had a wealth of interests, but medicine stood out. It offered an opportunity to help people in a field that never grows stagnant.

“I like being in a dynamic field, and in medicine things may be done differently in five or 10 years,” Dr. Nochumson says.

He reasoned no other field would be more satisfying than one where he could use a skill set and training to make someone feel better at a difficult time.

“I knew I would regret it if I had the opportunity to enter medicine and didn’t take it. And there’s virtue in it. At its core, medicine is a noble field that allows you to look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say you did something to improve someone’s life,” Dr. Nochumson says.

Background: Dr. Nochumson enjoys raising awareness about colorectal health through the media, by participating in health fairs, community events, talks and presentations. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and children. A lover of reading and travel, Dr. Nochumson enjoys finding diversity in his travels and taking in different cultures.
