Carbon hiring more lifeguards for lake

Carbon County is looking to add an additional four lifeguards to its roster at Mauch Chunk Lake.

On Thursday, the county salary board approved establishing the positions at an hour rate of $14.13 per hour.

Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko said that while the county currently employs 12 lifeguards at the lake, many of them are college students who will be going back to school before Labor Day, the official end of the swimming season.

“We’re looking to add four additional lifeguards through the end of August and Labor Day,” Sofranko said. “This would set us up not only for this year, but future years and give the park’s director more flexibility in scheduling.”

Mauch Chunk Lake’s beach is open for swimming with lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

To apply, the commissioners said to go to the county website and look under employment opportunities.
