Tamaqua awards street repaving contract

Cedar Street and a portion of Clay Street in Tamaqua will soon be repaved.

On Tuesday, Tamaqua Borough Council awarded a contract for the work to Gaver Industries Inc., doing business as Barker and Barker Paving, at a cost of $90,108.

“They’re the ones who paved Elm Street, Market Street and Nescopec last time,” Jay Stidham, director of public works, noted.

“I think they did a pretty good job,” Councilman Ron Bowman said.

The majority of funds will come from a Community Development Block Grant, and Liquid Fuels funding will cover the remainder.

A pre-construction meeting will be held soon, Stidham said.

While no start date has been set for the resurfacing, the borough street department began some base repair work on Clay Street. Plans are to resurface it between Nescopec and Pitt streets.

“Cedar Street we can’t do until they come. They’re going to mill it off. We are going to go in and do base repair and then the contractor is going to come back and do the paving,” Stidham said.
