July 18, 2003 — Tamaqua senior Kyle Spotts is named the Times News Baseball Player of the Year. Spotts, who helped his team win a district title and advance to the state championship game, posted an 8-1 record with a 1.73 ERA, striking out 79 batters in 73 innings. Opposing hitters batted just .220 against him. At the plate, Spotts delivered a .388 batting average with five homers, 22 RBIs and 26 runs scored. Included in his pitching numbers was a no-hitter against Tri-Valley and a shutout against Palmyra in the state quarterfinals.
