Weissport gets updates on levee, Forge St. projects

Mike Muffley of Hanover Engineering gave updates Monday night on several projects in Weissport borough.

The Army Corp of Engineering Levee Project continues to move ahead with the levee project.

“The Army Corps of Engineers is running a project with the Borough of Weissport as the sponsor, and they will be going to select sections along the river side of the levee to stabilize the embankment, to prevent erosion and scour in the event of a flood. They will be stabilizing it with rock,” Muffley said.

The Army Corps is looking to set up three staging areas from which the work will be done: near the White Street playground, Franklin Avenue near the park, and near Hofford Mill.

Borough Solicitor Gregory Mousseau is working to secure the proper agreements for the stage areas.

The levee was built in 1934. Weissport took over the maintenance of the levee around 1960. The Army Corps of Engineers, which must help repair the levee if it has been damaged by weather, takes turns with the Department of Environmental Protection to do an annual inspection.

UGI lines

The flood draining project at Forge and White streets is now waiting for UGI to relocate gas lines in the area.

According to Muffley, the gas lines were not as deep as it was supposed to be, and need to be lowered before the borough can continue their project.

Another issue with that project is the drainage pipe needed. Because the original type of pipe that was going to be used is difficult to obtain, Muffley recommended a change, and is looking to use ductile iron pipe.

“That’s the only kind of pipe we can put under the ground to have enough cover with the pavement and still have structural stability to have traffic go over it,” Muffley explained.

The cost of using the pipe, which is being funded by Carbon County, will be increased by $5,455.91. The borough council approved a motion for the increase.

Potholes

Councilman Bill Hartzell will be going around town to photograph some of the larger potholes that need repair and get an estimate on how much cold patch they will need to fill them. He will send a group text to the council members to advise them of the cost to fix the potholes.

Hartzell also advised that he contacted Country Junction about the lift the borough will need to rent to trim some of the dead tree branches in the borough park.

The cost would be $720 for a weekend. They are looking at the weekend of Aug. 17 and 18, then allow for time to use a chipper to clean up the downed branches.

Council Vice President Joe Foster mentioned that at least one resident along one block of Park Avenue towards Franklin Street, did not have garbage picked up. The unnamed resident called the haulers, Casella, several days who kept saying they would send trucks, but garbage was not picked up yet.

According to Council Member Brenda Leiby, the driver of the garbage truck paused at the Weissport Borough Park trash cans and looked inside, but did not empty the cans.

Council members will contact Casella to resolve the issue.

Police

Weissport Chief of Police Matthew Williams presented his report for the month of June 2024.

The 19 calls included four traffic violations; two each curfew violation, neighbor dispute, child abuse investigation, and assisting other police.

Williams is also looking into some motorized bicycles making noise at night in the borough. Council has received several complaints about the noise being made by the bicycles at night.
