Tamaqua LL team eliminated by Newtown

CONYGHAM — The ball just didn’t bounce Tamaqua’s way on Monday.

Tamaqua battled up-and-down the lineup, but in the end, Newtown just had more firepower, rallying from a two-run deficit to claim a 7-3 win in the Section 6 playoffs.

The loss ends Tamaqua’s 8-10-year-old all star tournament run, while Newtown advances to meet Lehigh, which it lost to Sunday 2-1 in seven innings.

“You know, there are times when things go your way, and there are times when they don’t, but I couldn’t be prouder of this bunch of baseball players, they played hard, but we just didn’t have that extra-punch,” said Tamaqua manager Bryan Smith.

Tamaqua jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, using a Grayson Smith single and walks by Bryce Tuckett and Abram Graver. A wild pitch allowed Smith to score, and Aidan Sabol’s groundout allowed Tuckett to score for an early two-run lead.

“We got that good start, but we knew how good (Newtown) was so it wasn’t like we were satisfied with those first two run,” the Tamaqua skipper offered.

The District 30 reps cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the inning when Graham Becker led off with a double and eventually scored on TJ Wengert’s infield groundout, making it a 2-1 lead.

Tamaqua was still in a good offensive mode in the second, and pushed across another run for a 3-1 advantage. Nolan Runk and Finnegan Davis walked, and with one out Ellison Sommers filled the bases coaxing a walk of his own. There were two outs when Chase Eltringham walked to pick up an RBI for the two-run advantage.

However, Newtown slowly worked its way back.

It scored twice in the bottom of the third to even things up at 3-3, getting hits from Logan Bovell and a two-run single off the bat of Arin Shah. Newtown in front for good with a solo run in the fourth on back-to-back hits from Mike Izzo and Gavin Zorich.

The winners plated three more runs for good measure in the home fifth on hits by Leyton McConnell, Logan Bonvell, Shah and Wengert.

“We had a great run, and the kids were fun to be with,” Smith said of managing the team.

HITTING AWAY … Newtown had eight hits in the books, led by Shah with three, along with a double from Becker, who had the only extra-base hit in the contest. Hard to believe that Tamaqua had only one base hit, coming from Grayson Smith to lead off the game, but the squad parlayed eight walks to its advantage in manufacturing the offense.

GREAT DEFENSE … Both sides had fantastic plays in the field. Tamaqua’s Abram Graver stayed with a bouncer back to the box in the fourth, and then played shortstop and snared a pop up that ended the fifth-inning Newtown rally. Tamaqua right fielder Tuckett alertly threw to second base on a ball that fell just in front his reach, but he knew the situation and threw out the runner going to the bag. Newtown’s Owen Taylor stayed with a grounder at first for a put out, and teammate second baseman Becker doing the same in fielding a sharply hit ball.

BIG EFFORT … The Blue Jays never backed down. They were dispatched by Newtown in the opening game of the tournament in four innings, and hung around and were within distance of a possible win Monday.
