Coaldale to repair sewer lines
Emergency repairs will be made to sewer lines underneath portions of Howard Avenue and Lehigh Street in Coaldale.
Councilman Francis Hutta said a camera was sent to inspect the Howard Avenue lines between Fourth and Fifth streets.
“All the laterals are broken connecting to the main line,” Hutta said.
Councilwoman Claire Remington saw footage captured by the camera.
“It’s cracked all on the top,” she said.
She noted that a garbage collection truck is among the vehicles to use the narrow street.
“The concrete is only about four inches so I don’t even know how it lasted as long as it did,” she said.
A main line under Lehigh Street also must be fixed.
In keeping with sewage issues, Councilwoman Angela Krapf urged residents to stop flushing wipes that are advertised as “flushable.”
“All of those wipes that say they are disposable wipes for the bathroom? They are not disposable,” she said.
The wipes don’t break down like toilet paper, and flushing them can cause clogs and blockages.
“There are so many people who get upset when the blockage is at their portion and nine times out of 10, it is those wipes that are in there,” Krapf said.
Council hired Joe Hutta Plumbing to make the emergency repairs. Councilman Hutta abstained from the vote.
Also during the meeting, council adopted a resolution that would require anyone putting in a new driveway to pave the first 20 feet of it.
The resolution was recommended by the borough’s zoning department because stones from driveways often wash into the streets during rainstorms.
“This will keep the streets clearer,” Remington explained.
It applies only to new driveways.
