Carbon man charged with vehicular homicide

A Summit Hill man who was driving a car that slammed head-on into a motorcycle on a Columbia County road July 3, killing the cyclist, was arrested this past week on charges of homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and numerous other offenses.

Craig William Evans, 23, was arraigned at 1:45 p.m. July 6 before Magisterial District Judge Russell L. Lawton of that county, and committed to the Columbia County Prison after being unable to post $75,000 bail.

State police at the Bloomsburg barracks said Evans is also charged with aggravated assault by a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, and driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance (general impairment).

Police said the crash happened at about 3:12 p.m. at the intersection of Route 118 and Mountain Road in Jackson Township. They said Evans was driving a car westbound on Route 118 at a high rate of speed and was illegally passing vehicles in the eastbound lane of travel. In doing so, the car struck the motorcycle head-on that was westbound. Police said both vehicles came to rest off the south side of the roadway.

They said Evans sustained moderate injuries and was transported to the Geisinger Medical Center, Bloomsburg.

The 22-year-old cyclist, who police did not identify, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evans also faces charges of careless driving, reckless driving, disregard for a single traffic lane, failure to drive at a safe speed, failure to keep to the right, turning movements and required signals, obedience to traffic control devices, passing where prohibited, unsafe passing on the left, improper pass and following too closely.

A preliminary hearing for Evans is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 16 before Magisterial District Judge Doug D. Brewer.

Police said the investigation of the crash is ongoing, involving state police from the Bloomsburg patrol, the Troop N Collision and Reconstruction Specialist Unit and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
