An event which will be noted in the history of Carbon County took place this morning with the breaking of ground for the Beltzville Dam construction.

The dam, which is one of three watershed projects approved for Carbon County in conjunction with the Delaware River Water Basin, will be located in the Big Creek area in sections of Franklin and Towamensing townships.

It is being constructed by the U.S. federal government under the U.S. Army Engineering Corps at an approximate cost of $3 million.

The other projects in the county are the Mauch Chunk Watershed project and a dam at the site of the Aquashicola Creek in Lower Towamensing Township.
