The Monroe County commissioners accepted bids for the parking garage maintenance project during their meeting on Wednesday. They will award the contract at their next meeting.
Chairman Commissioner John Christy said they opened the bids on Monday, but “both the engineers and the attorneys need to review the bids.”
The county received a total of six bids, which included:
• CPS Construction Group, $683,295;
• Sealcreate Contracting LLC, $553,734;
• D&M Construction Unlimited Inc., $720,000;
• South Shore Construction LLC, $513,090;
• MAARV Waterproofing Inc., $750,000, and;
• Pullman SST, $715,779.
“The Helix is in need of immediate repairs,” Christy said. “We have spalling concrete in areas.”
Spalling occurs when fragments - in this case concrete - fall off a larger structure due to cracking below the surface.
Once the contract is awarded, the work should start in September or October, Christy said.
As for if the parking garage will be closed while it is being repaired, Christy said. “Being as the helix is the only way in and out of the garage, we anticipate a part of the time it will be closed.”
The garage is located near the Monroe County Courthouse on North Sixth Street between Main and Sarah streets.
