Carbon courthouse closed Friday

Carbon County officials are reminding anyone needing to do business in the county courthouse will have to wait until Monday.

Last week, Eloise Ahner, county administrator, again sent out a reminder that the courthouse complex and county facilities will be closed on Friday to allow for an electric changeover to occur as part of the courthouse renovation.

She noted that all county offices except those requiring 24-hour operations, such as parking, the county prison and Mauch Chunk Lake Park, will be closed from the close of business on Wednesday and through that weekend.

Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said that there is a lot involved in this changeover.

He noted that the company completing the electric changeover is hoping to have it completed July 5, but Saturday and Sunday work is not out of the question if needed.

“It’s a big project,” Nothstein said, pointing out the building was constructed in 1893 so there are a lot of things that need to be done with this changeover. “It’s a lot of wires that have to be disconnected and reconnected.”

Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko again stressed that all county employees are essential to the success of county operations. He thanked them for their understanding throughout this project.

He also thanked the taxpayers for their understanding throughout the project.

Carbon County’s courthouse $5 million renovation project remains on schedule, according to the county last week.

Work began last November and includes HVAC and electrical upgrades, shifting some offices around and updating the functionality of the 120-plus-year-old courthouse.

The project is expected to take 18 months.
