July 2, 1988 - Two new records are set at the annual Race Street Run in Jim Thorpe. Lori Lawson, formerly of Tamaqua and now in Philadelphia, completes the 10-mile course in a time of 1:02.45 to break the old mark of 1:06.08 previously held by Kim Sweda. Sweda takes second in the race, while Tamaqua’s Alyssa Williams finishes in third. Terry Permer of Perkasie wins the overall race in :53.08.5 to erase the top time set two years earlier by Tom DeSchriver. David Ahner, former Lehighton resident living in Bethlehem, places second while Lehighton’s John Huntington ends in third.
