Tamaqua routs Thorpe to stay alive

Tamaqua bounced back nicely in its second game of the District 18 10-12 year old Little League Tournament.

After suffering a loss to Valley East in its opener last week, Tamaqua remained alive in the double elimination tournament with a strong performance on Wednesday night, defeating Jim Thorpe 11-1.

Tamaqua hurler Jaxson Faneck, who earned a win in the contest, never missed a beat despite having to deal with a lengthy rain delay in the second inning.

Faneck was dominant, pitching four strong innings, giving up just three hits and striking out five.

“Jaxson came out and he threw strikes and he was really locked in on the zone. You could tell he was very focused tonight. He walked just one batter,” said Tamaqua head coach Vito Geronimo. “He had his fast ball working. It was a great outing from him. He was accurate all game long.”

Tamaqua led 4-0 after three innings, but broke the game wide open in the fourth - scoring seven runs to inflict the 10-run rule. In doing so, Tamaqua took advantage of numerous Jim Thorpe miscues that included five errors and 10 walks.

“We were really patient at the plate tonight. We had 10 walks, and we made their pitchers throw a lot of pitches,” said Geronimo. “Going into this game, our game plan was to be very aggressive on the base paths as well.

“We ran every chance we had tonight. We have speed, so that’s something we need to utilize.”

While the pitching and run production for Tamaqua was impressive, one thing Geronimo wants to see his team show improvement in is their hitting.

Tamaqua had just three hits in game.

“We definitely need more hits, because we’re not always going to be able to rely on walks and miscues in the field like we did tonight,” said Geronimo.

OFFENSIVE STARS ... For Tamaqua, Faneck and Cain Conner both came through with two RBIs, while Chayse Barron and Kellen Krajcirik had one RBI each. Conner, Krajcirik and Joey Vidzicki accounted for Tamaqua’s hits. For Thorpe, Grant led the way with two hits.

UP NEXT ... Tamaqua will have a home game on Friday, hosting the winner of tonight’s Hazle Township at Tri-Country game. That contest was postponed by rain last night.
