Dorney wooden coaster turns 100

Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom will host the Thunderhawk roller coaster’s 100th anniversary celebration on Saturday with music, specialty themed food presentations and more.

Constructed in 1923 and 1924, this year marks 100 years since the wooden classic opened to the public.

Originally, the then named “Coaster” was built as an out-and-back roller coaster featuring little more than a drop and return. Over the years, it has been renamed and reconfigured into the ride guests can enjoy today.

“Thunderhawk is a national landmark and an integral part of our park’s history,” said Dorney Park Vice President and General Manager Jessica Naderman. “We are proud of the generations of men and women who have preserved this roller coaster over the years, and we’re excited to celebrate its centennial.”

In addition to the celebration, Thunderhawk will also sport special decals and signs for the 100th celebration.

The celebration day will include:

• 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. - temporary history museum;

• 11 a.m. - NanoCoaster building contest (fee to register), center stage, music by DJ Cap Cee;

• 12:30 p.m. - Wildlands Conservancy Red-Tailed Hawk presentation, center stage;

• 2 p.m. - Thunderhawks 100th Anniversary Ceremony, Thunderhawks stage near Dominator;

• 2 p.m. - NanoCoaster Contest Winners announcement, and;

• 2:30 p.m. - music by the Red Hot Ramblers, center stage.

Dorney Park is located at 4000 Dorney Park Road in Allentown.
