Schuylkill plans county fall cleanup

The Schuylkill County Commissioners discussed plans for a countywide fall cleanup at their Wednesday work session last week.

At their meeting this week, the commissioners are expected to set up the fall cleanup at 13 sites, including the Tamaqua Transfer Station.

This year’s fall cleanup accepted item list will include tires, appliances and bulky items, but not electronics.

The cleanup is open to all county residents. It will start on Sept. 2, and end on Sept. 14. The state Department of Environmental Protection will reimburse the county up to 50% for the cost of the event.

Next week, the commissioners are expected to approve advertising for bids for the waste tire collection, recycling and bulky items. Bids will be accepted in the County Controller’s Office until 3 p.m. on July 15, and opened in the commissioners’ board room on July 17 at 9 a.m., with a tentative bid award at the commissioners’ board meeting on July 24.

Next week, the commissioners are also expected to approve a $6,500 contract with M&L Associates for preparation of a Home American Rescue Plan application.

Cheryl Fuss, of the County Grantwriter’s Office, said the Home American Rescue Plan is a program to help homeless people.

A resolution to submit a Home American Rescue Plan application on Wednesday’s work session agenda was removed, Fuss said, because the M&L contract has to be awarded and the work completed before application can be made to the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Also this week, the commissioners are expected to approve a change order to extend a contract with Tri Vet Contracting for an Americans with Disabilities Act project to install a handicapped restroom in the Kline Township Municipal Building in Kelayres.

The contract extension is needed, Fuss said, to allow proper drying time for an epoxy floor system that is part of the project.
