Free dinner

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville will be hosting its free monthly dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. today.

The menu includes pierogies with butter and onions, pulled BBQ pork, coleslaw, watermelon and dessert. “A taste of summer,” said organizers.

Chestnuthill Twp. Historical Society

The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society is meeting today at 6 p.m. at the township’s park building in Brodheadsville on Route 715.

This meeting will be for regular business. Robert Serfass will present his local history program at the Sept. 18 gathering.

WPCL last meeting

The final meeting of the Western Pocono Lions Club will be held at noon Thursday at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville.

The club will be discussing how to distribute the balance of its treasury to charitable organizations.

Queen of Peace flea market

The Queen of Peace flea market will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

There promises to be something tor everyone, including collectibles, furniture, jewelry, handbags, tools, shoes, toys, holiday, books, crafts, frames, prints, lawn and garden, and much more.

Stop in and purchase lunch while checking out the basket raffle. Sausage and peppers, hamburgers and hot dogs, and so many more tasty treats are on the menu.

Chestnuthill Senior Center

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville hosts the West End Senior Center for the Monroe County from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

Friday’s menu hot meal is slated to be Veggie Egg Scramble and the cold meal is tuna pasta salad. Next Wednesday’s hot lunch is listed as chicken and dumplings while the unheated lunch is tuna pasta.

For meal reservation, call one day in advance by 10 a.m.

There is a requested lunch donation of $1.50 per meal.

Double event

Zinc City, Kresgeville, is having a Poker Run and Pig Roast on Saturday.

Registration for the Poker Run is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Pig Roast follows. Information on purchasing tickets (two different costs) can be found on the Zinc City Motorcycle Club Facebook page.

Zinc City is located about 2 miles west of the Route 209 and Route 534 intersection in Kresgeville on Route 209.

Kresgeville events

Two events are taking place at Polk Township firehouse on this weekend.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine, the Polk Ladies Auxiliary is holding a yard sale, bake sale and craft event.

There is a registration fee with a preregistration fee of $5 less the day of the event.

On Sunday, there will be a barbecue chicken dinner. Take out only. Pickup is from 2 to 4 p.m.

For tickets and cost information for the 1/4 chicken, baked potato, applesauce dinner roll, connect with any member of the fire company.

Effort pantry

The SFRC food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Time to apply

Monroe County residents can now apply for the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, and mail or drop off their application at the Monroe County Area on Agency, 724 Phillips St., Suite 102, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Giving’s begun

The Garden of Giving in McMichaels (mailing address Saylorsburg) has already distributed such items as kale, Swiss chard, parsley and strawberries to Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network, the Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort United Methodist Church and C.A.M.E. in Mountainhome.

Help is still needed as volunteers are needed for weeding, mowing, weed-whacking, mulching and harvesting, as well as some people to work inside in the comfort of an office, including four hours a week to help with letters and emails.

A grant writer and a volunteer coordinator also are being sought, as are board members.

Mission team trip

Members of the Effort Youth Mission Team are reminded to be at Effort UMC at 4 p.m. Saturday to load up the trailer with air mattress, personal clothing and tools and their buckets as well for the Mission Team trip. They and accompanying adults will be meeting at 5:30 a.m. Sunday and leaving by 6 p.m. for Dinwiddie, VA.

Live animals

Pocono Wildlife Rehab brings live animals to Kettle Creek. The program is titled “Amazing Animal Adaptations.”

Discover the incredible ways reptiles, birds and mammals of Pennsylvania survive and thrive in their natural habitats. Program will run from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Visitors can witness live animals up close and learn from the experts themselves.

This is a family-friendly event for all ages.

There is a small cost per person, but additional donations are welcome.

Directions to Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center: From Stroudsburg (or Exit 302 from l-80 west or 302B from l-80 East) go north on Route 611, travel a Polk Firehouse, half mile to the second traffic light in Bartonsville, and turn left onto Rimrock Drive. Follow Rimrock Drive for 0.4 mile, bear right onto North Easton-Belmont Pike, go 0.2 mile, then bear right onto Running Valley Road. The Center is 0.7 mile on left.

PVA field day

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church will be hosting Good Vibes Field Day for PV Kids from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church in the lower field.

Any child entering first through sixth grade may attend this special event. The intention is tons of fun in the sun, field games and Popsicles.

All attendees must preregister and sign the online waivers.

PVEN’s outreach

During May, the PVEN assisted many individuals through its four specific ministries. The food pantry assisted 277 families, totaling 826 individuals.

Current needs include cereal, tomato sauce, condiments, coffee and tea.

The Clothing Closet served 51 families, which included 163 individuals. It needs shaving supplies, body wash, deodorant, bath towels, bedding; toothbrushes, toothpaste, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies and paper towels.

The Diaper Pantry helped 114 families, and the Menstrual Hygiene pantry aided 160 individuals. Needed there are baby formula and baby food; bladder pads and adult sized pullups, as well as bed protector pads.

A Back-to-School Extravaganza will be held in August when students in Kindergarten to 12 grade will receive free supplies for the coming school year.

Each participating child receives a new backpack, sneakers, underwear, socks, dental hygiene products, menstrual hygiene items (where needed) and grade appropriate school supplies.

Summer Camps

Registration for three summer camps at Monroe County’s Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm are now open.

They include Living History Camp from June 24 to 28; Farm Explorers Camp 1820s from July 8-12; and Nature Explorers from July 15-19.

Closed church lot

If the weather cooperates, the parking lot at Effort UMC will be resealed and the lines repainted beginning June 24 and also June 25, weather permitting.

The church leadership is asking for meetings to be held in the pavilion. Those who want to visit the church are asked to do their best to postpone coming to the church during that time. If someone must come to the church, please park in St. John’s Lutheran Church parking lot and walk over.

WE Republicans meeting

The West End Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville. Individuals planning to eat dinner there or socialize are asked to arrive an hour earlier.

Help asked

Operation Touch of Home will be at the Pocono Race in Long Pond on July 12 to 14 sharing the word of what OTH is and what it does for the Troops.

The hours are 2 to 6 p.m., July 12, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The group is seeking volunteers.
