blood drive in memory of leukemia patient

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, July 2, at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Pocono Manor in memory of Shakil Williams.

Diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 11, Williams fought bravely to overcome the disease while waiting for a bone marrow transplant. He was a fun-loving kid who enjoyed playing in the park and fishing. He even brought his fishing derby trophies to his hospital room for inspiration.

Shakil’s father said his son was a brave fighter who never lost his spirit. Williams passed away on Dec. 18, 2005, just two days after his 12th birthday.

Blood transfusions play a critical role for those in treatment for leukemia. Every day, volunteer blood donors across the country are needed to help save lives.

To make an appointment to give blood at this drive, donors can visit RedCrossBlood.org and use sponsor code KALAHARIPOCONO, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
