Carbon to host movies on the beach, adds food vendors

Visitors and residents who enjoy the beauty of Carbon County will see a few new things this summer.

During the county commissioners’ meeting on Thursday, the board in 2-0 votes, approved two motions that deal with activities at Mauch Chunk Lake Park and downtown Jim Thorpe. Commissioner Wayne Nothstein was absent.

The first motion approved an agreement with Lehigh Valley Events and Productions LLC of Allentown for three nights of moonlite movies at Mauch Chunk Lake Park at a total cost of $6,957.

Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko noted this is part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the park and noted the additional information and dates will be posted on the county Facebook pages.

Funding is also being supplied by Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau, he added.

The movies will be held once a month during the summer and is free and open to all county residents.

“It will be a great night out for the family,” Sofranko said.

The staff hopes to have the movies right on the beach, but the exact location within the park will be determined on where the equipment can be safely set up. Vendors in the park may also sell snacks at reduced rates.

In other county-owned property matters, the commissioners approved another concession lease agreement for an additional vendor in Josiah White Park. This now brings the leases for food vendors in the park to six.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner commended Sofranko for being a driving force in this matter.

Sofranko said the three additional vendors will provide a variety of new items, including Italian ice/sno cones, a variety of nuts and meat, cheese and vegetable bowls and are all current Carbon County resident owned businesses.

The current vendors in the park specialize in Italian pastries, hot dogs and deep fried foods.

“I’m excited that the vendors are coming,” Ahner said. “... There will be a little bit more of a selection for people visiting or coming off the train. It’s a win-win for the county overall.”

The commissioners said the decision was to help provide additional food options since Jim Thorpe has grown in popularity for visitors over the last several years.
