Turnpike crashes

State police at the Pocono barracks reported several crashes recently on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike as follows:

• Darcianna L. Lewis, 19, of Plymouth was uninjured after a car she was driving struck a deer while driving northbound at the Hickory Run Service Plaza in Penn Forest Township.

Police said she was driving a 2024 Nissan Maxima that sustained moderate damages.

• Stephanie N. Stein, 28, of Slatington, was uninjured in a crash at 4:09 p.m. June 8 at mile marker 86.3 in Penn Forest Township.

Police said she was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox southbound when she was passing another vehicle and a deer entered her lane of travel, striking it and causing disabling damages that required the car to be towed from the scene.

• Police said the driver of a vehicle that struck a tractor trailer at 6:15 p.m. June 5 at mile marker 83.7 in Penn Forest Township fled the scene.

They said the vehicle was passing the rig, which was operated by Dawud Abdul-Wali, 65, of Phoenix, Arizona, and struck its passenger-side mirror, causing minor damages.

• Edward P. Clark, 73, of White Haven, was injured in a crash at 8:18 a.m. May 23 at mile marker 65.5 in Washington Township.

Police said he was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 southbound when he lost control of the vehicle and it struck the guide rail. The vehicle then swerved left and struck the center concrete barrier.

The truck had disabling damages. Police said Clark was not transported from the scene.

• No one was hurt in a two-vehicle crash at 3:20 p.m. May 16.

Police said it happened on Route 209 southbound in Franklin Township when a 2008 Honda CRV operated by Dana A. Mertz, 27, of Lehighton, struck the rear of a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Jeremy D. Stuckley, 46, also of Lehighton. Both vehicles had minor damages, police said.

• No one was injured in a three-vehicle crash at 2:50 p.m. June 3 at mile marker 94.7 in Kidder Township.

Police said it happened when the vehicles were southbound and traffic slowed before them. They said a 2009 Toyota RAV4 driven by Robert Y. Phelan, 71, of Lisle, New York, struck a 2021 Volkswagen operated by Geoffrey A. Fesko, 45, of Webster, New York, which then struck a 2022 Ford F150 operated by Joseph D. Harkleroad, 23, of Rural Valley.

Police said the RAV4 and Volkswagen were towed from the scene while the F150 was able to be driven from the scene.

They said Phelan and Fesko were both cited for “following too closely.”

• Clarence R. Bain III, 55, of Delran, New Jersey, was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5 p.m. June 9 on the ramp of the Pocono Interchange in Kidder Township.

Police said he was transported by MedEvac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township. They said the severity of his injuries is unknown.

Police said he was operating a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia northbound and was on the exit ramp traveling at a high rate of speed while negotiating a curve.

They said Bain lost control of the rig, which traveled up a steep embankment and rolled over, spilling its cargo onto the roadway/ramp. They said the road was shut down for about five hours

Police said before the crash, they received several calls from motorists who complained the rig was traveling erratically.

They said Bain was pinned inside the vehicle until being extricated by emergency responders. He was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed, police said.

• Robert T. Hill, 70, of Dover, Delaware, was uninjured when a 2023 International he was driving struck a deer at mile marker 68.8 in Washington Township at 12:44 a.m. June 4.

Police said he was southbound when he was unable to avoid striking the deer that was standing in the right lane of travel. The vehicle had disabling front end damages, police said.
