The appointment of R. Newton Davenport of Lehighton to succeed Stuart E. Prutzman, also of Lehighton, as Carbon County superintendent of schools, was announced over the weekend by state authorities.
Davenport, a native of Wilkes-Barre, has been assistant to the veteran county superintendent and will assume his new duties when Prutzman ends 36 years in that position on July 1.
Davenport became Prutzman’s assistant upon the retirement of Miss Nan Jenkins of Nesquehoning on July 1, 1963.
The new superintendent came to Carbon County in 1941, assuming the duties of supervisor of special education for both Carbon and Northampton counties.
