Groundbreaking ceremonies for a 15,000-square-foot Spare Time Bowling Center were held this week at a site east of the Laneco Mall plaza in Rush Township.

Ralph and Shirley Updike and their family will operate the center. They ran the Sky Lanes bowling center, now a part of the Hometown Farmers Market, from December 1985 until July 1994.

Updike said the new facility will feature 16 lanes, a snack bar, video room and pro shop, and will be open seven days a week. The facility is expected to be open in time for Labor Day.

Construction and equipping the building is expected to cost in excess of $1 million.
