Lansford man sentenced in airport explosives case

A Lansford man was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to two-and-a-half years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for attempting to place an explosive device on an aircraft and possessing an explosive in an airport.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Marc Muffley, 41, was found in possession of a bag containing an explosive device, a can of butane, lithium batteries, a lighter, and other items at Lehigh Valley International Airport on Feb. 27, 2023.

He checked the bag for a flight to Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida. After hearing his name over the airport’s public address system, Muffley fled the airport and called his girlfriend to pick him up. He also changed his phone number to avoid detection. Muffley was arrested by the FBI the next day and later pleaded guilty on Jan. 17, 2024.

“Today’s sentencing of Marc Muffley serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to strict regulations and safety protocols in air travel,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. “The possession of an explosive on a plane poses a grave risk of fire, explosion, and catastrophic consequences for everyone onboard. I commend the efforts of local, state, and federal enforcement officials in their diligence and moving swiftly, thereby ensuring the safety of all those affected.”

Wayne A. Jacobs, special agent in charge of FBI Philadelphia, echoed these sentiments, stating that, “protecting the American people is the very core of the mission at the FBI.”

“This case demonstrates how seriously we must take this mission,” Jacobs added. “Due to the swift action by airport authorities and law enforcement, a potentially deadly incident was averted. The FBI and our partners remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all who work in and travel through our airports.”

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, with assistance from the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority, the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Department of Transportation – Office of Inspector General.

Assistant United States Attorney Robert W. Schopf prosecuted the case.
