PPL restores power after possible tornado moves through Schuylkill

A possible tornado was reported in Mahanoy City just before 8 p.m. Monday.

The high winds knocked out power to the west end of the borough, and reportedly ripped roofs from homes and knocked down trees.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning to residents of the borough and surrounding areas Monday evening.

John W. Blickley, director of the Schuylkill County Office of Emergency Management, said PPL crews worked through the night to restore power and as of Tuesday morning, only six customers remained without it.

Blickley noted that county, municipal officials and fire departments would conduct preliminary damage assessments Tuesday morning.

In addition, the National Weather Service in State College is sending a survey crew.

Social media posts from residents show the funnel cloud hovering above the borough. Videos capture large garbage cans blowing on sidewalks and a sign from the Dollar General store on West Center Street lying on the ground.

The Mahanoy Area School District closed Tuesday due to the storm damage.
