Lansford Borough Council

Lansford Borough Council moved through a lengthy list of actions at its meeting Wednesday night.

Council acted on the following agenda items:

• Hired Dennis Anderson of Lansford as a part-time employee in the streets department for the summer, or as needed, at $19.99 an hour not to exceed 400 hours.

• Appointed Denise Leibensperger to the borough zoning hearing board. She was the only applicant.

• Heard from residents on numerous issues, including neighbors with 20 or more cats in their homes, causing health and quality of life concerns; issues with a survey for parking to proceed with apartments; a sanitation ordinance, and use of borough website and social media to post rules, such as trash.

• Advertised an ordinance to change a yield sign on the west side of Parkway Road to a stop sign.

• Hired Dunn Tree Service to remove 27 trees to allow access to repair a manhole located in the woods west of Walnut Street. Cost is $2,700.

• Dedicate 2024 Community Development Block Grant funds to install curbing and paving on Cortright Street between Abbott and West Water streets. A survey has been completed and the move will provide more parking.

• Applied for a 2024 Local Share Account (Monroe County) grant in the amount of $100,000 to buy an excavator and trailer.

• Bought a zero-turn lawn mower from M&S Hardware in Tamaqua for $8,899.

• Authorized a final benefit payment to former borough secretary, Wendy Butrie, in the amount $7,469.44 less appropriate taxes. The amount corrects a previous amount approved. Council split 3-3 on the vote with Councilman Joseph Butrie abstaining. Mayor Hugh Vrablic broke the tie.

• Approved training for assistant borough secretary, Ashely McLaughlin, to attend two-day training session for borough secretaries in Wilkes-Barre on May 29 and 30 at a cost of $75. The training is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs.

• Refunded $49.98 to Irene Swiatek for non-usage of an oversized vehicle permit. She was not able to obtain the permit when the office was closed, and does not need it now.

• Tabled a $500 refund to Joseph Creazzo for completion of street excavation. Council Vice President Jay Doyle reported the street repair settled and is not complete.

• Approved getting bids/cost on a new camera system for the borough office and outside the building.

• Tabled getting an appraisal for 32 acres of land at the east end of Lansford for the purpose of selling the tract. The borough chose to research the deeds before taking any action to ensure ownership.

• Tabled changing fees for signs for handicapped and business parking. The borough’s fee schedule is currently under review for changes.

• Tabled action on amending the garbage and animal ordinances. Council members continue to work on potential revisions.
